ABOARD HANK’S SHIP, UNDISCLOSED LOCATION

Sara ambled back into the cockpit eating cereal. “Anything?” she asked.

Hank glanced at the bowl disapprovingly but didn’t comment. “Nothing yet. I’ve cross-referenced the details Burner’s team gave us, but it’s not enough to get a lock on any one signal.”

Sara sat down in the chair next to Hank and noticed him flinch. Knowing him, he was likely fretting that she was going to spill milk and cereal over his precious computers or something. She chomped down on another mouthful. “You know I was thinking,” she started, mouth full.

“You were?” he asked dryly.

She smiled, still chewing. “Yeah, I was. We’re assuming this guy saw an ad and took the job that way. But what if he’d interacted with any of the nodes on the Ring first?”

Hank’s brow furrowed. “You mean, any of the clusters Judy was using to backtrack communications between known associates of dirtbags in the Ring originally?”

Sarah nodded. “Yeah. Exactly. What if he’s a known associate. That would give us a few more connections that might take us back to bank accounts and the like and give us something to track down.”

Hank smiled and then turned his head towards her. “You’re not just a pretty face after all.”

She shook her head, raising her eyes to the ceiling. She knew he respected her really, but this was their banter. You couldn’t afford to get too soppy out in the field. It could lead to all kinds of entangled feelings. So, you kept things playful. Easy-going. You used banter and ribbing.

It was just their way.

Sara carried on eating her cereal. Though she looked like a model, and pretended she was just some cavalier spy, she was actually highly intelligent. Graduated top of her class in everything she’d done.

“Well, what do we have here?”

She sat up and placed her empty cereal bowl on the console in front of her. “Got something?”

He glanced at the bowl, pointedly, but continued. “You were spot on. I think we’ve got something. Odds are it’s going to lead back to some accounts or profiles at the very least.”

His display streamed with information, which he clipped and moved to a report document. “If there’s anything you need to get done before we leave,” he continued, “do it now. I think I’ll have something for us to track down shortly.”

Sara stood and picked up the empty bowl. “Yes, sir!” She disappeared out to the ship’s living quarters, clomping in her untied boots, carrying the cereal bowl and spoon. This was what she lived for: tracking down criminals. And from what Burner had told them, this one had it coming.
